Practical Application

Reading is critical to building knowledge in Family and Consumer Sciences and connecting it with other disciplines such as social studies, English, science and math.
Family & Consumer Sciences provides an excellent opportunity for the students to apply knowledge from various disciplines.
Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
7. Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse formats and media, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words.*
8. Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence.
9. Compare and contrast findings presented in a text to those from other sources (including their own experiments), noting when the findings support or contradict previous explanations or accounts.
Applications in FCS
Claims are constantly surfacing in the area of nutrition, consumer economics, psychology (part of social studies but taught by me), personal finance and consumer marketing. In FCS we view, critique and discuss content and ideas mentioned above and welcome a strong debate that requires critical thinking skill, reasoning, evaluation of evidence and verbal articulation of one's point of view. It is necessary to bring higher level text to the classroom and this is will be a focus in the fcs department.
Key Ideas and Details
3. Follow precisely a complex multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks;
analyze the specific results based on explanations in the text.
Culinary arts application in the kitchen following recipes to create a delicious product is the perfect example of following a complex multi-step procedure. The analysis of the recipe and the final product allow a student to reference their text and examine the outcome.
In psychology we use the scientific method, asking a question, developing a hypothesis, designing an experiment, and calculating the results. The results are then analyzed and a conclusion is drawn.
Life (personal finance and relationships course) How do I find a bank or credit union that's right for me? How do I improve my credit score? How do I apply for a loan? What do I do when a baby cries? Where can I find a job? Answering these questions requires multi-step processes, decision making, critical thinking and the performance of specific tasks. It is my job to help students understand their options, know the resources available to them and to help them go through the process before it actually counts.
